Leachate is a toxic liquid composed of rainwater and garbage by-products. Leachate forms when rain falls on a landfill and mixes with the excretions of the trash in the landfill. The leachate then percolates into the ground and eventually finds itself in local water sources. These include rivers, lakes, ground water reservoirs, and irrigation pipes. That’s right. If you live by a landfill, you might find yourself drinking leachate without knowing it. Leachate is harmful to humans as well as plants and animals. Landfills hurt everyone, not just us.
